ARTHUR GONZÁLEZ

Arthur González is an internationally exhibiting artist with over fifty one-person shows in the last forty years, including eight in Manhattan, New York.

Life

Three distinct phases have influenced the direction of González’s artistic career and expression. First, as a graduate student, at the University of California at Davis, under Robert Arneson and Manuel Neri, he entered the Master of Fine Arts program as a figurative sculptor during the late 1970’s after completing an Master of Arts in painting at the California State University of Sacramento. His second phase was as an artist in residence at the University of Georgia, Athens from 1981 to 1982. González’s attitudes towards art changed through his exposure to a creative life-style that blended music and visual art. The third phase of González’s career was through his involvement in the early 1980’s East Village Art Scene, in New York City, which fast-forwarded public recognition of his work.

González has received numerous awards, fellowships, grants and residences throughout his lifetime, a few notable ones being the the National Endowment of the Arts Individual Artist fellowship in 1982 and 1984, the Art of California Magazine Discovery award in 1991, the California Arts Council fellowship in 1994 and the Virginia Groot Foundation award in 1997. A selection of his exhibits include: The Susan Cummins Gallery, Mill Valley, California; John Elder Gallery, New York, New York; Phyllis Kind Gallery, New York, New York; Robert Kidd Gallery, Birmingham, Michigan and the Sharpe Gallery, New York, New York.

Work

Dark, somber and foreboding, Arthur González’s works encourage serious deliberation and reflection on the relationship between personal concerns and world issues. Raw in form, lacking in smoothness and rough in finish, the ceramic sculptures give glimpses of a conversation or a contemplation in progress. González’s creations of ceramic and found objects reveal visions and feelings that are not polished but ongoing processes of gyrating thoughts and churning emotions that threaten to erupt into reality and consciousness to defy the fantasy of a peaceful experience.

Aesthetically, his work balances between painting and sculpture, clay figures with blown glass, and horsehair and natural sponges. The understanding that these elements are not “found objects” or even mixed media but closer to the ideas of “material” by Joseph Beays. The figures are a devise to trigger our need to see “narrative” which is a support system for the symbols and the material. These pieces are constructed in such a manner that some pieces are literally and metaphorically in balance with a degree of fulcrum-like equation. Consequently, there is a symbiotic relationship, the sculpture becomes a metaphor for the dialogue and the dialogue is ushered in by the sculpture.

Teaching

González is a tenured professor at the California College of the Arts (formerly CCAC). He advises his students to rid themselves of the process normally associated with ceramics, get past things that are supposedly bad technique (like epoxy in cracks), solve problems creatively and remember spirit when making work.
